  5.                           GROWING YOUR OWN SEEDLINGS

  7.               You can also start your own plants from seeds.  
  8.           Some of the seedlings will have to be transplanted, and 
  9.           others will continue to flourish in the original planter.
  10.           
  11.               Date Palms -- You must be sure that date seeds are 
  12.           non-pasteurized, so when buying packaged dates, read the 
  13.           label carefully.  Although date palms grow to heights of 
  14.           sixty feet in their natural habitat, they make strikingly 
  15.           unusual house plants.  Plant about three or four seeds in 
  16.           soil, in a pot of about four inches across.  As the palms 
  17.           grow into seedlings, transplant them, one by one, into 
  18.           larger planters.

  20.               Grapefruit, Orange, Tangerine, Lemon -- Although we 
  21.           think of these as the sunshine fruits, they have been known 
  22.           to grow in underground caverns, such as mines, planted by a 
  23.           workman, and nourished by nothing but a single light bulb.  
  24.           Seeds should be planted, as soon as they are taken from the 
  25.           fruit, in a mixture of soil and sphagnum peat.  Keep the 
  26.           soil mixture damp (not wet), in a lighted place, but out of 
  27.           the direct sun.

  29.               Apple Tree -- Plant apple seeds in a soil mixture 
  30.           that has been provided with good drainage.  They will grow 
  31.           into tiny apple trees.
  32.           
  33.               Avocado -- Plant the avocado seed as soon as it is 
  34.           removed from the avocado.  Plant it in a mixture of peat 
  35.           and soil, with the pointed end up, just above the soil.  It 
  36.           will take the seed from thirty to sixty days to sprout, and 
  37.           as the young plant grows, it will develop large, glossy 
  38.           leaves, something like those of the rubber plant.  When the 
  39.           plant is about eight inches high, pinch off its top; this 
  40.           will produce a low, bush-like plant.

  42.               All seed plants should be provided with drainage.  
  43.           Punch holes in the bottoms of the containers, then put in 
  44.           about a half-inch of crushed rock.  Finish filling the 
  45.           planter with the appropriate soil mixture.
